Pastoral Care, Tutors and House System

HCS provides academic ambition, creativity and resilience within a happy and vibrant atmosphere. HCS is a school where pupils feel at home, secure and happy. Our pastoral care is, along with academic excellence, our main priority and every member of staff (teaching and none teaching) works hard to make our pastoral support system outstanding.

Our pupils talk openly about how they love being part of the school, how they are known by every teacher and feel they can turn to anyone at any time. This is because of our stringent pastoral system which is at the heart of everything we do.

Each pupil at HCS is assigned a tutor with whom they must register every morning and will see at least twice through the day. The tutors are the parents’ main point of contact and are accessible at all times via the school email. It is the duty of the tutor to monitor pupils’ academic and pastoral wellbeing and therefore it is important that tutors have regular contact with parents. This partnership between parent, tutor and pupil is vital to the success of all pupils at HCS.

Outside of the year groups the school also operates a traditional vertical house system where pupils from different age groups combine to form one of four houses. These houses are central to developing relationships and friendships across year groups. There is healthy competition in both arts, academic and sporting house competitions which pupils and staff all enjoy throughout the school year. These are often fiercely contested and give a wide variety of pupils the opportunity to represent the house in a designated event. There are several ‘major’ house events each year which allow the whole school to either watch or participate. These provide the school community the opportunity to get together with a common purpose and develop the already strong sense of belonging.
